I was gonna start this post with how completely blown away I was by Sky Captain And The World Of Tomorrow when I first saw it. The problem with that is that it couldn’t possibly be any further from the truth. It was one of those rare occasions where I was completely baked, I didn’t have the foggiest idea what the fuck was going on and about half way through it I asked my friend Iris who the hell that Jude Law fellow was and what he was doing in this movie.
Anyway, I watched it again a few days ago with my roomies and I noticed something funny. At about 15m57s they show a bunch of newspapers in different languages, one of which is German. Me being the inquisitive bastard that I am of course hit pause to read it.
It’s amazing how many errors they managed to squeeze in here. First of all there is a typo in the headline (Metallr), “stehlen” (to steal) appears twice for whatever reason and Metallmaschinen should be one word. Clearly, who bestowed such great care on the caption must have done an even more magnificent job with the small print! So I harnessed the power of full HD resolution and took a closer look at the rest:

And I wasn’t to be disappointed: “Schlechte Desends Nach Landschaft” isn’t a sentence, Desends is not a real word, and even if it were it still wouldn’t make a whole lot of sense. And why does it say December 16th when the date in the movie is around March 17th? But the real kicker is the actual text. Schröder, Chirac and Blair – are you fucking kidding me? If you can’t be bothered to come up with some real text… fair enough. But have those people never heard of lorem ipsum?

You’d think that with an estimated budget of 70 million dollars they’d be willing to spend a measly 50 bucks on a German major at the local college to proof-read their shit. But to be fair, the scene lasted a grand total of maybe 2.5 seconds. Why spend any more money on it than absolutely necessary? Because it’s the insignificant details that make things great. It’s when you do something right that you weren’t really expected to get right that people notice it. But there’s always hope for the Extended Edition.

Geeky side note: The second image’s WordPress-id is 1337.

What a glorious day! First a Swedish court convicts Pirate Bay owners, then German’s family minister Ursula von der Leyen persuades ISPs to block child pornography websites. Now all we have to do is outlaw violence and theft and world peace is at hand!

Oh, wait…

The whole thing would be a good laugh if it wasn’t so frightening. I’m not gonna comment on the Pirate Bay ruling, there is plenty of press coverage on that as it is, and it’s the blockage of web sites containing child pornography that really worries me. Not because I endorse it (far from it) but because it is not merely a futile move but a dangerous one at that.

Here is how it is supposed to work: Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office (aka the BKA) creates a list of all web sites containing child pornography and supposedly updates it on a daily basis (that alone gives rise to plenty of questions). That list is then forwarded to the ISPs who block all access to those sites.

First of all: it’s not gonna work. Ever. There’s VPN, there’s Tor, there’s proxies… but this is what you get when politicians make decisions about things they don’t understand. We were all very happy to hear that Germany’s Minister of the Interior Wolfgang Schäuble finally realized that the internet isn’t really just a modern telephone switchboard. Even he has his moments.
And even if it did work it wouldn’t change a damn thing. The children were already abused. The damage has been done. You are fiddling with symptoms. It’s populism, and nothing but populism. All it will achieve is force pedophiles deeper underground, aggravating the problem if anything. You can close your eyes all you want, it’s not gonna make the issue go away. If history has taught us one thing it is that people who desire forbidden things have always found ways to get it. It takes a lot of willful ignorance not to see this.

In and by itself this may not seem all that bad. But you have to see this in context: a while ago a German court approved of a house search of a blogger who linked to a site that in turn linked to another site which was on the Danish child pornography blacklist. Add the fact that “child pornography” is a delightfully fuzzy term to begin with and you find yourself on a very slippery slope to censorship.

This isn’t China. Yet. But we get closer to the edge every day and when you look at the big picture it gets really scary. Censorship is unacceptable, whatever form it may take. Wehret den Anfängen!

Not knowing jack shit about grammar: bad.
Not realizing that at least one spelling has to be wrong: worse.
Being too stupid to just look at one of the fucking boxes: retarded.

In German this linguistic disease is called Apostrophitis (using an apostrophe where none is allowed) and Deppenleerzeichen (unnecessarily splitting a word up in two parts), respectively. And it’s a god damn epidemic.

Anyone who goes through the trouble to learn German has my utmost respect. It’s not like my English is anywhere near perfect.
